There are several points to keep in mind when evaluating the effectiveness of using AdSense. First, it is true that a marketer can make a great deal of money using this platform. There are even people who use AdSense exclusively and make a very good income. When people who are new to internet marketing hear this, they become excited and want to jump in and start getting a share for themselves.

The truth is that anyone who makes more than $100 per month with AdSense either has a very large, successful website that draws thousands of viewers a day or they have a huge number of smaller websites. Those with many websites typically have hundreds or even thousands of these mini-sites.

For the majority of online marketers today, it is not worth the trouble to create sites just to promote AdSense. That’s because a click on an AdSense ad often only pays a few cents depending on the keyword the ad is targeting. Of course, there are some keywords that pay a lot more but these days those are not always easy to target.

Only a few years ago, some marketers were getting several dollars for each click on many keywords. But today, these lucrative clicks are very rare in most niches. As a rule, most clicks are now worth about $0.50 or less with some of the smaller niches only pulling about $0.10 or less per click.

When you do the math, this means that if you want to make $10 per day and you know you will get $0.10 per click, you will need 100 clicks. But not everyone will click on your ads so, if you have a clickthrough rate of 5%, which is reasonable, you would need to have 2,000 people visiting your website every day just to make $10 per day.

That’s a lot of work to get enough visitors for such a small return. You can probably do better if you direct your traffic toward a good affiliate product or create an email list so you can sell them your own product with no middleman.

If your site appeals to a general audience and is hard to target, AdSense might be a good choice. That’s because AdSense is good at finding targeted ads that match the content on a particular page. If you create thousands of pages of content and put AdSense links on them, you will see your income grow as you add pages to your site.

AdSense might be the right choice for you if you are not interested in marketing your own product. In that case, you can combine it with affiliate marketing. It is still fairly easy to create a site that is heavy with content, include relevant affiliate links and AdSense. People will come to your site for the great information you provide and then click on your links. This can provide you with a very nice online income.
